Nachwuchs der Hochschule Emden Leer die Graduiertenaka-
demie nutzen – dies wurde Anfang Juli in einem Kooperati-
onsvertrag vereinbart. Zusammenarbeiten wollen Universität
und Jade Hochschule künftig auch im Bereich Unternehmens-
gründung: Studierende und WissenschaftlerInnen der Jade
Hochschule können die Dienstleistungen des Gründungs- und
Innovationszentrums (GIZ) der Universität in Anspruch neh-
men – und die Angebote des Entrepreneurship-Lehrstuhls im
Rahmen des EXIST IV-Programms.
Schlaues Haus eröffnet
Nach zweijähriger Bauzeit ist Ende September das Schlaue Haus
eröffnet worden – mit einen Bühnenprogramm, Vorträgen und
einer „Schlauen Meile“, auf der WissenschaftlerInnen ihre Pro-
jekte vorstellten. Der lichtdurchflutete Neubau, architektonisch
integriert in den denkmalgeschützten Altbau gegenüber vom
Schloss, will Schaufenster der Wissenschaft sein, „eine Begeg-
nungsstätte zwischenWissenschaft und Bürgern“, so Geschäfts-
führerin Petra Buchholz. Das Schlaue Haus wird gemeinsam
von der Universität und der Jade Hochschule getragen. Mit
den Zukunftsthemen Energie/Klima und Wohnen/Leben prä-
sentiert es wissenschaftliche Leitthemen beider Hochschulen.
Luther im Nordwesten
Was sind die Folgen der Reformation, welche Bedeutung hat
sie für den Nordwesten Deutschlands? Diesen Fragen geht das
Kooperationsprojekt „Freiheitsraum Reformation“ in den kom-
menden fünf Jahren nach, um das 500. Reformationsjubiläum
im Jahr 2017 vorzubereiten. „Freiheitsraum Reformation“ ist an
den Instituten für Geschichte und Evangelische Religion der
Universität angesiedelt. In Vorträgen, Konzerten, Ausstellungen,
Inszenierungen, wissenschaftlichen Tagungen, in Gemeindear-
beit und Schulprojekten soll das Reformationsjubiläum „eine
eigene, nordwestdeutsche Handschrift erhalten“, so die Pro-
jektleiterin und Oldenburger Historikerin Prof. Dr. Dagmar Freist.
Gefördert wird das Projekt vom Beauftragten der Bundesregie-
rung für Kultur und Medien, Staatsminister Bernd Neumann.
Energie aus Wasserstoff
Wasserstoff könnte im Energiemix der Zukunft eine wichtige
Rolle spielen. Die Verbrennung vonWasserstoff setzt gewaltige
Energiemengen frei. Statt umwelt- oder klimaschädlicher La-
sten fällt lediglich reines Wasser an. Das Sonnenlicht könnte das
Wasser inWasserstoff und Sauerstoff spalten, so die Vision eines
im Juli gestarteten bundesweiten Schwerpunktprogramms der
Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), das von der TU
Darmstadt koordiniert wird. Die Arbeitsgruppe „Theoretische
Chemie“ der Universität Oldenburg umProf. Dr. Thorsten Klüner
ist mit zwei Projekten beteiligt, die die DFG zunächst für drei
Jahre mit 400.000 Euro fördert.
OFFIS feiert 20-jähriges Bestehen
OFFIS, das Institut für Informatik, hat im Juli sein 20-jähriges
Bestehen gefeiert – mit Ministerpräsident David McAllister,
Wissenschaftsministerin Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka und mehr als

Smart House opened
Young scientists at the Jade University of Applied Sciences will
in future be able to participate in the courses offered by the
University of Oldenburg's Graduate Academy. A cooperation
agreement to this effect was signed by University President
Prof. Dr. Babette Simon and Dr. habil. Elmar Schreiber, President
of Jade University, in June. In addition researchers at the Uni-
versity of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer will also be able to take
part in the Graduate Academy's programme - as stipulated in a

Luther in the North West
What are the consequences of the Reformation? What impact
has it had on north-western Germany? These are the questions
the cooperation project "Freiheitsraum Reformation" will
address in the coming five years in the run-up to the 500th
anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. The "Freiheitsraum
Reformation" project is based at the University's Institute of
History and Institute of Protestant Theology. A series of lectures,
concerts, exhibitions, plays, scientific conferences and commu-
nity and school projects will aim to give the 500th anniversary
of the Reformation "its own northwest German signature",
the manager of the project and Oldenburg historian Prof. Dr.
Dagmar Freist explained. The project is being funded by Bernd
Neumann, Minister of State and the German Chancellery and
Representative of the Federal Government for Culture.
Energy from hydrogen
Hydrogen will play a key role in the energy mix of the future.
The combustion of hydrogen releases huge amounts of ener-
gy, and instead of producing substances that are harmful to
the environment and the climate its only by-product is water.
Sunlight can be used to split the water into hydrogen and
oxygen. This is what a nationwide programme launched by the
German Research Foundation (DFG) in July and coordinated by
the Technische Universität Darmstadt envisions. Led by Prof.
Dr. Thorsten Klüner, the University of Oldenburg's "Theoretical
Chemistry" research group is involved in two projects within
the programme which will receive 400,000 euros in funding
from the DFG for an initial period of three years.
