Liebe Leserin, lieber Leser,
wenn der Zoologe Gerhard Zotz zur Arbeit fährt, nimmt er kein
Auto, kein Fahrrad und keinen Bus. Er nimmt den Baukran. Dieser
setzt ihn in den Wipfeln des Tropischen Regenwaldes ab. Zotzens
ganzes Forscherinteresse gilt den Epiphyten, auch Aufsitzerpflan-
zen genannt. Hier oben, in bis zu 60 Metern Höhe, strahlt die Son-
ne direkt auf die Gewächse ein, es herrscht extreme Trockenheit.
Eine Wüste, wo man sie nicht vermutet. Wie die Epiphyten mit

Um das Erbe der von Martin Luther initiierten kirchlichen Erneu-
erung geht es in dem Essay der evangelischen Theologin Andrea
Strübind. Die Erinnerung an die Reformation hat ihre eigene
Geschichte, zeigt Strübind. Gemeinsam ist den Luther-Jubiläen
bislang, dass sie die Reformation oft instrumentalisierten – für
Zwecke ihrer Zeit. Strübind fragt: Ist es möglich, dem Dilemma
2017 zu entgehen, wenn sich die Reformation zum 500. Mal jährt?
Ganz anders die Frage, die der Oldenburger Ideenhistoriker
Matthias Bormuth aufwirft. Wie kann man Schüler und Studieren-
de möglichst interaktiv an die Bücher und Biographie von Karl Jas-
pers heranführen? Bormuth, einer der Gründer der Oldenburger
Karl-Jaspers-Gesellschaft, arbeitet im neuen Jaspers-Haus mit der
Bibliothek des Existenzphilosophen. Im Interview spricht Bormuth
darüber, was es bedeutet, zwischen den Disziplinen zu forschen
– und warum sich der Blick von außen auf die Wissenschaft auch
heute noch lohnt.
Eine Gratwanderung: Das ist für Björn Poppe die Strahlentherapie.
Sie muss Tumorgewebe zerstören und gesundes Gewebe scho-
nen. Der Strahlenphysiker arbeitet seit Jahren an Messgeräten, die
möglichst genau erfassen, wie sich die Strahlendosen im Körper
verteilen. Mit einem eigenen Verfahren haben Poppe und seine
Kollegen weltweit Standards in der Strahlenforschung gesetzt.

Dear Readers,
Zoologist Gerhard Zotz doesn't drive, ride his bike or take the bus
to work. He goes up in a construction crane, which drops him off
in the treetops of the tropical rainforest. Zotz's entire research
is focussed on epiphytes, plants that grow on other plants. Far
above the ground, at heights of up to 60 metres, the sun shines
directly onto the plants and the conditions are extremely arid – a
desert where no one would expect to find one. Discover how
epiphytes cope with these extreme living conditions in our cover

Theologian Andrea Strübind's essay addresses the legacy of
Martin Luther's ecclesiastical reform. The commemoration of the
Reformation has a history of its own, Strübind shows. All Luther
anniversaries to date have instrumentalised the Reformation in
some way – in the interests of their times. Strübind asks whether it
will be possible to avoid this dilemma in 2017, the 500th anni-
versary of the Reformation.
Intellectual historian Matthias Bormuth is concerned with a very
different question. How can we introduce schoolchildren and stu-
dents to the books and life of Karl Jaspers in a way that is as inter-
active as possible? Bormuth, one of the founders of Oldenburg's
Karl-Jaspers-Gesellschaft, works with the existential philosopher's
library in the new Jaspers-Haus. In an interview Bormuth talks
about interdisciplinary research – and why the outsider perspec-
tive on science is still valuable today.
Radiation therapy is a balancing act, Björn Poppe explains. Its goal
is to destroy cancerous tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact.
The radiation physicist has spent many years working on devices
that measure the distribution of radiation doses in the body with
the highest possible precision. Poppe and his colleagues have
developed their own procedures that have set global standards
in radiation research. Read the article by Poppe and his team on
